MBA Candidate Karen Punn was recently awarded the Women in Capital Markets Heather L. Main Memorial Scholarship.

How did you develop an interest in Capital Markets?

Before starting my MBA, I worked within Canadian Retail Banking for approximately 7 years.  I was keen on pivoting into an analytical, fast-paced, and challenging role, and realized that my interests aligned closely with a position in Capital Markets. From there, I worked closely with the Career Development Centre (CDC), previous Heather L. Main scholarship recipients, as well as individuals within Capital Markets to really gain an understanding of the industry and opportunities for growth. 

Where will you intern this year? What are you most looking forward to in the months ahead? 

I will be interning at RBC Capital Markets in Sales & Trading this summer through the Global Markets Program (GMP).  I am most looking forward to being pushed completely out of my comfort zone alongside some of the brightest people in the world!

What brought you to Schulich and how would you describe your experience here?

After working full-time for about 2 years, I knew it was time to take my career to the next level by obtaining my MBA. I knew that I wanted to attend a world-class school in Toronto, which narrowed my choices down to a few, but my journey to Schulich was actually quite personal. It was my brother, Raman Punn, who graduated from Schulich with a BBA and, most recently, a Master of Business Analytics (MBAN) that really solidified my decision to choose Schulich. I witnessed first-hand the impact that Schulich had on his personal life and professional career, and knew that this was the right school for me!  

My experience at Schulich can be summarized in two words: LIFE CHANGING. One piece of advice I would give to any student would be to get involved. Through my involvement with the Graduate Business Council (GBC), the External Case Team (led by the incredible Joe Fayt) and various other campus initiatives, this is where some of my most incredible learning experiences have come from. Furthermore, I have built networks that I will be connected to for decades to come.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

In 5 years, I see myself holding a leadership role within the Financial Services industry. I hope to inspire and champion the success of other young women who want to build careers within Capital Markets.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to other women considering a career in capital markets, or pursuing a business education? 

Never be afraid of taking on a challenge or going outside of your comfort zone. I have talked to so many women who have opted out of incredible opportunities because they felt as if they would never “get it” or be “good enough.” One of my favourite quotes by Thomas Jefferson is, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”
